Potluck for the Dead…A Story…

Image
Every year since ‘69, a house is chosen for the potluck. Ten people attend. Every year. It's held on the evening of the 8th of August. Sharon's chosen date. It seems reasonable. After all, it was her idea to have these potluck affairs. Sharon loves having people over, cooking herself, trying new foods, and having Jay bring the wine. And she's long accepted the fact that this odd band of souls would be forever linked. So why not get together and become good friends? That's Sharon's thinking. And through these 56 years, the ten have indeed become close, bonding better than blood relatives over an inevitable coming-together of fated moments in time. And well, summer's end wouldn't be with this annual feast. This year, Gary's place is the location.  LASO It's never a big deal for the guys to host the party, for they know Sharon, Gibby, and Rosemary will help them in the food and party essentials. The potluck dinner is never stressful. No...

Hate and Horror, My Cheer…

They left. I saw them leave. It took forever. I wonder… Do all well-healed Beautiful People take THAT long to go somewhere? Well, you know, my take on Time is not as others but it seemed to take forever. Mind you, there was a tense moment there, or what felt like ten minutes, when whoever was driving that Chevelle either was under the influence, nervous as Hell or just had a death wish desire to screw up the new paint job on that black-striped-ride-from-Heaven with a rather easily avoided collision with that hideous gate. I mean, who goes out of their way to scratch a cherry Chevelle with a metal gate. Not me, Man! Oh, Boy, not me! Ah, well, kiddies will be kiddies…I think that scruffy little dude didn’t belong up here anyways…ragged jeans, a non-designer T-shirt looking like it had been clean…last Wednesday… It’s amazing though, you meet someone you didn’t plan on meeting, not of your class, not from your “world”, and you end up just plain liking the guy…what ya gonna do?...

August 8, 1969 - The Eve

Spahn Ranch old oak Manson may have punched on that fateful eve A beater engine roared up Santa Susana Pass Road. It was Charlie and his "New Love." There was always another "New Love." Their leader was not met with the usual glee. Things had changed around the ranch since Gary's death. The Family was split in two — the ones who "knew," and the ones who didn't. A strange paranoia permeated the Family, fueled by weapons and weapons training sessions. No longer was the scene of free love, folk music, and LSD orgies for which Manson's clan had been known. Charlie stopped the old truck in front of the boardwalk and was met by a few very tense looking Family members. He had several girls tour Stephanie Schram around her new home while he caught up on the latest news. None of it was good. His girls told of Bobby's arrest for the murder of Gary Hinman. Before Charlie could digest the news, Sadie, her eyes glassy, her expression vacuous, said, ...
